Marbury Country Park near Northwich in Cheshire is situated on the site of Marbury Hall, which was once part of a grand country estate. In the mid 1700s the hall was owned by the Barrymore family, who rebuilt the house in the 1850s in the style of a French chateau, it then decended to the Smith-Barry family who owned the house until the early 1930s when it became a gentlemens country club, with an 18 hole golf course, sailing on Budworth Mere, and tennis courts, and in 1935 an outdoor swimming pool was built. and is still in use today.
At the outbreak of the second world war Marbury became a camp for German and Italian prisoners, after the war it then bacame refugee camp.
The hall was demolished in 1968 and the grounds were then developed into Marbury Country Park by Cheshire County Council.
The Arboretum is a section of woodland planted in the mid 19th century as part a larger project to re-landscape the whole estate after the new hall was built. Here you can find a variety of exotic trees from Europe, America and Asia.
The Lime Avenues were planted in the 1840s by the Smith Barry family.
