Lion Salt Works Marston nr Northwich (2006) The Lion Salt Works is the last remaining open pan saltworks in Cheshire, England. It is situated in Marston, near to Northwich in Cheshire.
Lion Salt Works was established in 1894 by the Thompson family and remained in their ownership for five generations. The Thompson family had been producing salt since 1842. In the 19th century Cheshire was producing 86 per cent of England's salt.
Lion Salt Works was forced to close in 1986, with the loss of West African markets during the Nigerian Civil War, which were major purchasers of natural salt.
The salt works is a grade II listed building and work is underway to obtain funding to restore the works Buildings. The site operates as a museum, with demonstrations of salt making techniques. The museum is an Anchor Point of ERIH, The European Route of Industrial Heritage.
In 2004 Lion Salt Works was a restoration candidate on the BBCs Restoration programme.
