The Grey Squirrel: Sciurus carolinensis: Grey Squirrels are not native to the UK, they were introduced from North America in the mid-nineteenth century.
They prefer to live in deciduous woodland but can be seen in gardens, parks, towns and cities.
Description: Dense silvery grey fur with a brown tinge along it's back in
winter. In summer their fur is a yellowish brown, white underneath bushy grey tail and no ear tufts.
Height: 18 inches in length (head to tail).
Weight: 400-800g
Life-span: 3-4 years but have been known to live up to 10 years.
Food: Acorns, beech mast, hazelnuts, tree bark, fungi, leaves, young shoots,
flowers, also bird eggs and sometimes young
birds.
The grey squirrel spends most of it's time searching for food, it is most active at dawn and dusk, unlike the red squirrel who spends most of it's time in the trees the grey squirrel can be seen foraging and feeding on the ground rather than in the trees.
The grey squirrel lives in a nest or dray it's the size of a football and made of twigs and quite high up in the trees, the grey squirrel does not hibernate in
winter as it cannot store enough energy to survive for long periods, grey squirrels usually produce three young in late spring early summer.
